How do we go about explaining the Trinity?

05-27-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the feast of the Most Holy Trinity.  So...how de we go about explaining the   Trinity?  We don’t!  It is a mystery!  But that is not enough.

Our God is a trinity of persons, Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit;  we all know that, or I hope we do.  The doctrine of the Trinity was developed over time, mostly during the 3rd and 4th centuries by some of our greatest theologians.  It was developed by reflecting on the scriptures, by looking at the many references to God.

CDA News

05-20-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

We finally started to receive the results of our Charity and Development Campaign. It seems that the diocese made some change in their computer system, and, of course, there were some problems. They made the change just before the CDA campaign started, so we did not receive accurate results until now.

Happy Mothers Day

05-13-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

At the risk of being politically incorrect in our gender neutral society, I want to wish all of our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. In fact, I will go a little farther and wish all grandmothers, godmothers, or any who carry that sacred title of “mother” a wonderful day as well.

For all of us, this is a special day, whether our mothers are living or not. I remember shortly after my mother died I began to realize an even stronger relationship with our Blessed Mother, Mary. She is a mother available to us all as adopted brothers and sisters of Christ. Maybe that is why we honor Mary, not just with a day, but with a whole month.

Let us welcome Fr. La Combe

05-06-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

Many of you know Fr. La Combe, a retired priest form the diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Father was a military chaplain for the Marine Corps in California and has retired here in Arizona. He has helped us occasionally with Masses and with confessions.

I was talking to Fr. La Combe recently about retirement and he mentioned the adjustment it is to be without a community, and how much he enjoys helping us. I have asked him if he would like to be scheduled for one English Mass every weekend and he said he would love it. Starting this month, Father will be with us once a week. Please welcome him as I know you will.

Help us grow into a great future

04-29-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

I know I have been speaking to you a lot about the Diocesan Evangelization Campaign, but it is very important for our diocese and for our parish. Adolescents have a tendency to live for "me" and for "now ", but as adults we think bigger than that: we think of our community and the future. This campaign is about our community, our diocese, and about our future as a parish community.

Our diocesan evangelization campaign will impact a huge portion of our diocese.

04-22-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

I want to explain a little more about how the diocese will spend your contributions to the evangelization campaign, Together Let Us Go Forth, Juntos Sigamos Adelante.

Did you know that research tells us that 80% of people who leave the faith do so by age 23? Some of that is due to our secular universities where professors can criticize our faith, but cannot defend it. Our Catholic Newman Centers at the three major universities in our diocese will receive a total of $10 million to help our Catholic students grow in their faith.

Lots of changes and planning

04-15-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

It is that time of year when there is a lot of changes and planning; let me share with you what has been happening:

First, as I announced earlier, our sisters will be leaving the convent in June; their congregation is leaving our diocese. Fr. Paul Sullivan, the Vocations Director for our Diocese, has asked if we could host a seminarian this summer. Since the convent will be open, I told him we would be happy to have a seminarian.

04-08-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

Today we launch our part in the Diocesan evangelization campaign, Together Let Us Go Forth-Junto Sigamos Adelante. This is an exciting time for both our diocese and for our parish. We join with Pope St. John Paul II and with Pope Francis as missionary disciples in the new evangelization.

He is risen! Alleluia!

04-01-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

He is Risen!! Easter is a time of new life and looking to the future. It is a time to remember how the great "Alleluia" spread throughout the world. This year, Easter is also a time for us to remember our call as "missionary disciples", spreading that great "Alleluia" into the future.

Entering into Holy Week

03-25-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

It is hard to believe that we are moving into Holy Week already. As I always say, this is not a "business as usual" week. Try to enjoy the many great celebrations and try to find time for extra prayer as preparation. This is a good time to go to the scriptures and read again the various accounts in the four Gospels.

Together Let Us Go Forth - Juntos Sigamos Adelante

03-18-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

During Lent I have been talking with you about Pope Saint John Paul II's call to a new evangelization and Pope Francis' understanding that this means to be "missionary disciples", not simply disciples.

This leads to Bishop Olmsted who has called the Diocese of Phoenix to embark on a Campaign of Evangelization. He calls this campaign, Together Let Us Go Forth - Juntos Sigamos Adelante". This campaign will focus us into the future as well as asking us to improve our efforts at evangelization today. As you know, we are building a new high school in the far west valley, St. John Paul II High School, which will open next Fall. A number of our 8th graders plan to attend there next year. We also want to strengthen our three University Newman Centers because it is at secular universities that most young adults leave or drift from their faith.

We are Missionary Disciples

03-11-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

In a talk he gave a couple of years ago, Bishop Olmsted said, "Pope Francis insists that we who believe in Jesus are not merely disciples, we are missionary disciples. Christ not only calls us to be with Him; He also sends us forth." It is not enough to come to Mass and receive God's Word and the Body and Blood of Jesus, we are sent at the end of Mass...sent into the world as missionary disciples.

A call to growth in faith

03-04-2018From the PastorFr. Michael Straley

Howdy,

Last week I quoted Pope Francis in saying that by their baptism, all members of the Church have become "missionary disciples". Some of us are not simply disciples and others missionaries, but all are missionary disciples.

Our Holy Father also says, "The Lord's missionary mandate includes a call to growth in faith: 'Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you' (Mt. 28:20). Hence it is clear that the first proclamation also calls for ongoing formation and maturation. Evangelization aims at a process of growth which entails taking seriously each person and God's plan for his or her life. All of us need to grow in Christ. Evangelization should stimulate a desire for this growth, so that each of us can say wholeheartedly: "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me" (Gal. 2:20)."
